Student Assistance Program (SAP)
WHAT IS SAP?
The PNSAS website defines SAP as the following: "The Pennsylvania Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a systematic team process used to mobilize school resources to remove barriers to learning. SAP is designed to assist in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student’s success. The primary goal of the Student Assistance Program is to help students overcome these barriers so that they may achieve, advance, and remain in school. While Student Assistance Programs exist in other areas of the country, the structure and operation of the program in Pennsylvania is a unique expression of an integrated model serving the needs of Pennsylvania families and students."

What happens once I make a referral?
Once a referral has been made, the SAP team will have a Parent Consent Form completed and signed by the parent.
Once the team has parental permission, they will collect information by asking teachers and parents to complete an observable behavior checklist.
Next, the SAP team will meet and review the referral and information collected.
The team will then decide the severity of the issue/behavior.
Finally the team will decide the proper course of action which can result in a student being assigned a case manager or being referred to a SAP clinician.
If the student is referred to a SAP clinician, the parent will be asked to complete the SAP Consent Form. This will allow a SAP counselor to meet with a student five times for free. After the initial five counseling sessions the SAP clinician will determine if additional sessions are required.
